I believe the connection between discipline and love are strongly intertwined. Without love, the so-called discipline most likely could be abuse. Our children are born into this world with their sin nature racing to find out what it can get into and get away with (Prov. 22:15), but the rod of discipline will drive them far from it. When we do not give that rod of discipline, do we love our children enough to drive the sin nature out of them? (Prov. 13:24) Isn't the Hebrew meaning for the word "rod" translated as "used for beating or striking"? I believe true discipline requires a great love for our child that only God can provide us parents with and that our spanking is effective if it is used to help them see the error of their ways and hopefully cause them to choose a better way next time around. If done in that way, the rod will not kill our children (Prov. 23:13-14). God has provided two nice little cushions on their backside that are able to withstand it and at the same time, we are delivering a message to their mind and spirit that will lead them into what God wants for them.
